Nicola McCartney is interested in the narratives between girl and animal in the traditional fairy-tale and concept of Animal Drag as a means of political resistance. Her paintings often depict the projected fantasies of subjects who play the role of the heroine, sometimes subverting the stereotype. She is interested in the agency of the ‘animal gaze’ and the media’s  portrayal of celebrity culture.
